1944 (iv)

Uma das questões acordadas na conferência de Teerão foi que a União Soviética lançaria uma ofensiva coordenada com o desembarque e subsequentes operações na Normandia.

Peter Earle, Assistente Militar do General Archibald Nye, VCIGS (Vice Chief of the Imperial General Staff), escrevia no seu diário, no dia 3 de Junho:
"It is interesting to note that at D minus 2 we know not one thing of Russian intentions, where and when and how great a strength their offensive will take place. [Hitler's staff] has given priority to the West and are prepared to lose ground in the East, in order to throw us into the sea in the West. Hitler told the Japanese Ambassador this. It will be a grim battle, leading, I think, to the disintegration of German forces next February."

"In North America the black bear was seen by [Samuel] Hearne swimming for hours with widely open mouth, thus catching, like a whale, insects in the water. Even in so extreme a case as this, if the supply of insects were constant, and if better adapted competitors did not already exist in the country, I can see no difficulty in a race of bears being rendered, by natural selection, more and more aquatic in their structure and habits, with larger and larger mouths, till a creature was produced as monstrous as a whale."
